There has been so much noise about Achebe's war memoir. i wonder why that shoud be. Achebe has always been a man who speaks through his books, either in form of fiction or non-fiction, and he has always spoken the truth at all times, no matter whose ox is gored. Why then i wonder should there be so much noise this time? Is it because it involved The great Awo? Calling it as it is should not be news to anyone who knows Achebe. When he wrote ''The Trouble With Nigeria'' he didn't spare the late Zik, but was all praises for late Aminu Kano. No one castigated him then. Why now? Because he called it as it it?
Why is it that we do not always want to hear the truth. People should go research the truth about the Biafran war and what they'll find will amaze them. How innocents were slain: women and children, the aged. I know some of you will call it casualties of war. Yes. But these casualties should not involve peaceful people, like the act carried out in Asaba. These people are known for their peaceful ways and yet many of them were slain when they came out in their traditional attaire to supposedly welcome a soldier in the person of Murtala Muhammed.
Am sure that if researches are carried out, other tales of genocide will emerge.
Please let Chinua Achebe be. Even before he wrote this about Awolowo, I've heard tales of how he was the brains behind the genocide. I implore other like-minded authors who had first hand knowledge of the war put pen to paper and inform and let the world know the truth about 'the real civil war'.
